Winter Sports Preview

Strong Start for Winter Athletics

The Heights fields five sports during the winter season: basketball, wrestling, swimming, climbing and squash. Apart from squash and climbing all sports compete in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC), one of the most competitive high school leagues in the country.

Here’s a look at the upcoming season for each sport.

Basketball

Our varsity basketball Cavs have started the 2019-2020 season well. Led by seniors Michael Harrell, Joe Byrne and Jordan McMillen The Heights notched its first ever WCAC victory in thrilling fashion, taking down O’Connell 70-67. The Heights used that momentum to beat Whitman and St. Mary’s Ryken (WCAC) and improve to 4-3 overall. The Cavs will look to ride this momentum as the boys begin Christmas break with a difficult test against nationally ranked Paul VI.

You can see the full schedule and all results here.

Wrestling

Wrestling started the season with a trip up to Hagerstown, MD for the Holloway tournament held at St. James. Although the result of the meet did not go in The Heights favor there were many positives to take away from the meet as The Heights finished fourth overall, which is the best finish ever for a Heights wrestling team. Led by Joseph Moynihan, Jack Bakey and Steven Kilmer, The Heights will compete against some of the top wrestlers in the country as the season starts to pick up after Christmas break. Be sure to come out and cheer the boys on!

Swimming

With a record of 9-1 varsity swimming has been dominant during the first month of competition. Some of the Cavs signature wins have come against Landon twice, Bullis and St. Albans. This year’s team has been powered by its depth of talent something that hasn’t been there for the Cavs in recent years. One outstanding addition is freshman diver Finn Gelbach who has won all three of his diving matchups and earned critical points for The Heights. Swimming will resume after the Christmas break on January 7th against Bishop Ireton.

Climbing

The varsity climbing team has opened the season with wins against Bullis and Georgetown Day. Once the season picks up again after break the team will be very busy in the month of January with four meets scheduled against schools such as Flint Hill, St. Albans and Episcopal. Climbing will continue to keep pushing ahead in preparation for the climbing championships taking place in early February.

Squash

Squash has been training hard over the last few weeks so they can be ready to hit the ground running in 2020. Stiff competition awaits the boys returning from break with two big matches against Gonzaga and Landon. Be sure to cheer on the boys in their next match.
