The Heights wrestling team took the WCAC by storm this season. For the first time in the school’s history, one of the team’s wrestlers, senior Liam Kilner, placed first at the Maryland Independent School State Championship. Along with this victory for the team, his younger brother, freshman Ben Kilner, finished second place in the JV bracket and new addition to the team, sophomore Elias Hughes, won three matches in a row, showing strong signs of growth for the team.
As one of the smallest teams in the WCAC, The Heights wrestling squad continues to punch above their weight, and this year especially. With the limited size, the team suffered a few forfeits due to not filling all weight classes. However, the team still outperformed in every area they competed.
At the close of the season, Coach Joe Breslin remarked, “One of the hardest parts of the sport is just the mental game, and getting over the fear that you will be too tired to stay completely locked in for the entire match. There is no greater feeling of victory than winning under those circumstances, particularly when it’s just you versus another guy who you know is of comparable strength and weight. Guys who can do this day in and day out for years, like Liam and all my veteran wrestlers, can do basically anything they set their minds to.”
After such a successful season, Coach Breslin is excited for next year: “We have a number of talented young guys on the team, and some returners who have dramatically improved. I’ve always been blessed with a really good group of young men, which is not surprising, really, when you consider the character necessary to stick with this sport.”
Congratulations to the Heights wrestling team!
