“Secure on the Heights”: Forming Loyal Men in a Culture of Sentimentalism

Psalm 18 describes the solid steadfastness offered by God to man: "And who is a rock, except our God? — the God who girded me with strength, and made my way safe. He made my feet like hinds’ feet, and set me secure on the heights."

Our community’s vision for our sons surely includes a sense of stability and steadfastness in conviction and commitment to God, spouse, and community. In short, the man fully alive is loyal.

Loyalty wouldn’t be praiseworthy and aspirational if there weren’t challenges. And there are, of course, challenges. In particular, the sentimentalism of our greater culture is a formidable yet surmountable obstacle to our young men’s quest to “plant themselves in the rocky fastness,” and to serve, in turn, as rock for others in the future. Our sons are relentlessly encouraged to follow their affections and feelings wherever they might lead, whatever their commitments. How can we, as parents and teachers, help our boys become men who passionately love the world without being pulled off course by the sentiments and affections that are a natural aspect of our God-given humanity?

Heights Headmaster Alvaro de Vicente will offer his insights and experience in navigating the cultural challenge of sentimentalism, along with the time tested means by which we can guide our boys to a place of existential strength of mind, body, heart, will, and soul–to being men fully alive whose yes is yes, and whose no is no.

Doors open to the Main Building on campus at 7:00 pm and the talk will begin at 7:30.

All parents and friends are welcome!
