Description and Objectives

This class will study the great Romantic poets of the 19th century for an in-depth appreciation of how they changed the poetic landscape of our language. We will read Blake, Burns, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, Keats, Byron, Emerson, Thoreau, and Poe, among others. We will examine their vision of poetry and its function in the world as well as the particular poetic standards each of these writer developed and shaped into an articulated, lyrical contemplation of humanity’s nature, origin, and destiny.
