On Friday afternoon, January 10, around twenty-five students, faculty, and alumni competed in the third annual Cavalier Classic, a powerlifting competition hosted on campus. Each participant earned points from his max squat, bench press, and deadlift. Competitors ranged from first-time lifters who set a benchmark and goal for themselves, all the way up to seasoned powerlifters. Two awards were given: one for absolute highest score and another that adjusted the score based on the lifter’s body weight. Class of 2005 alumnus Mike Kaufman won both this year, achieving a 605 lb squat, 405 lb bench, and 600 lb deadlift.
The Cavalier Classic was founded during physics class a few years ago when a student challenged his teacher to a lift-off during lunch time and the challenge was accepted. Excitement of the news spread throughout the school and more students and faculty wanted to compete. This was the first year alumni joined and we hope to see more in the years to come.
