Learn the fundamentals of wrestling in this fun camp that emphasizes the basics of grappling and the virtues of sport!
Wrestling teaches numerous physical skills such as positional strength and coordination, mobility and flexibility, speed, agility, and balance. It also teaches many virtues such as fortitude, patience, cheerfulness, responsibility, mental toughness, humility, self-mastery, sportsmanship, and friendship. It is our goal at the Heights not only to teach our athletes how to perform their sport with excellence and provide them with a useful workout, but also to assist parents in engraining the virtues mentioned above, and more.
The campers will be wrestling live every day so they learn to correctly apply the principles and moves they learn during the camp come match time. In addition to wrestling technique, there will be a short talk every day on a virtue and how it applies to sport in general.
The camp is scheduled to run from 3:10-5:10, allowing campers from other camps to simply stay later for Wrestling Camp.
Staff:
The camp is led by Coach Joe Kilner, a Heights wrestling alumnus. Kilner started wrestling at seven years old, competing on a travel team until high school. In high school, Kilner joined the Heights Varsity team with great success, placing at numerous tournaments each year. He is a multiple time WCAC Championship placer, Maryland State Championship placer, and National Tournament qualifier. In November 2025, Kilner joined the Varsity Wrestling coaching staff at the Heights as an assistant coach, giving general and personalized training in practice and competitions for the team.
What to Bring:
Campers should bring a water bottle and wear regular athletic clothes (shorts and a T-shirt will do) every day. If a camper owns wrestling shoes and/or headgear, he should bring them, but there is NO NEED to purchase wrestling shoes or headgear for this camp.
