Accolades to the Aqualiers and WCAC Coach of the Year Tom Royals

The 2022-2023 Heights Swim and Diving team, affectionately known as the Aqualiers, finished the best year in school history. The team went 10-0 in dual and tri-meets, finished 5th place in the National Catholics Swim Tournament, 2nd place in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) Tourney, 3rd place in the Washington Metropolitan Prep School Swim and Dive League (WMPSSDL) Tourney, and 6th place in the end-of year METROS. The turning point in the season was a big win against Georgetown Prep, where the team’s depth secured not only 1st and 2nd places, but also points from the 3rd through 6th places! That depth proved true in the end-of season tournaments as well. Moreover, senior diver, Finn Gelbach, stunningly set the pool diving record at the Georgetown Prep meet. He went undefeated in his three years of high school meets (COVID took a year away) and finished 1st place in the WCAC and WMPSSDL during those three years. Coach Tom Royals was named the WCAC and WMPSSDL Coach of the Year.

The team’s depth was not the only factor in the Aqualiers’ success. On several occasions this season, the opposing team’s coaches commented on the energy and spirit that The Heights team brought to the pools! Congratulations on an excellent season, Aqualiers!
