The Heights baseball program captured its first Old Line Baseball Conference Championship since 2011 and is poised for a deep run in the private school state tournament starting next week.
Led by a dominant pitching performance from senior captain and Cavalier Award winner, Guy Patrick DeSanctis, the Cavaliers dispatched Avalon 8-1 on Saturday night to advance the Monday’s championship games versus Goretti.
After falling behind 1-0 to the Gaels in the first inning the Cavaliers battled back with timely hitting from senior Henry Crooks and junior Chris Houlihan. Starting pitcher and senior captain Vincent Buono navigated his way through the Goretti lineup scattering just three hits over the course of seven innings on his way to being named tournament MVP and leading the Cavs to the 7-1 victory.
The Heights will say farewell to 13 seniors at the end of the year, but not before taking a shot at a private school state championship when they travel to DeMatha on Monday before hosting McNamara on Friday in hopes of advancing to the semi finals and finals on Memorial Day at the University of Maryland’s Shipley Field.
