Shoot the rapids! Ride the waves! Camp overnight!
WHAT: This camp will get you out of the house and onto the local rivers! Swim in nearby lakes and paddle along the C&O canal. Run whitewater rapids. Learn camping skills and knots. You will learn how to handle a canoe on flat waters, slow rivers and crazy rapids. Building slowly and surely from novice to intermediate skills, campers will learn all the skills to successfully pilot a tandem canoe on class II and II+ rapids. This camp meets for the entire week: Ground school and practices on Monday and flat water training on Tuesday get the camper ready for exciting river action the rest of the week. On Thursday and Friday, we take an overnight canoe camping trip on a nearby river like the James, the Shenandoah, the Manocacy, Potomac or Antietam Creek, or others.
WHERE: First meets at the Heights, deploys to local rivers and campgrounds.
WHEN: Meets on Monday at the Heights. Location may vary due to water conditions. Thursday – Friday is an overnight camp on a local river.
WHO: Limited availability, Grades 9 – 12. Campers swimming ability will be tested.
Projected Schedule: (Specific locations and events likely to change due to local weather conditions):
- Day 1: Ground school, water safety, swimming checks, equipment etc. Basic flat-water skills in a local lake or on the Potomac river.
- Day 2: Advanced water safety, intermediate flat-water skills, intro to rapids.
- Day 3: Water safety drills, flat-water and whitewater skills. Camping basics.
- Day 4: Intermediate white water overnight camping trip.
- Day 5: Intermediate white water overnight camping trip. (Return to The Heights by 5:00pm.)
Price: $675 for the five-day camp. All canoeing (canoes, paddles, PFDs, etc.) and camping (tents, sleeping bags, etc.) equipment required for the camp will be provided. Camper must provide appropriate clothing and water shoes.
Camp instructor: Mr. Andrew Acevedo. Mr Acevedo has been a teacher at The Heights for the past fifteen years and has extensive canoeing and camping experience. One other experienced adult canoer and camper will participate.
